South Coast NRM Actions
Strategic Catchments
Strategic Catchments are one example of integrated delivery of NRM investment in the Region.
This activity has delivered integrated investment from a number of key subprograms, enabling effective delivery and minimising duplication.
Co-investment activity includes Profitable Perennials, biodiversity and riparian vegetation, risk management remnant vegetation and riparian fencing, integrated engineering and soil health.
An example of the success of the implementation of catchment plans has resulted in the following:
Bremer Bay – establishment of 2,942ha of perennial pastures; 722ha of permanent perennial pastures in riparian zones; 259ha of biodiversity revegetation; and 52km of drainage (surface and deep water assessment); and 79ha of biodiversity revegetation to protect/enhance waterways.
West River – establishment of more than 1,630ha of exotic perennial pastures and 256ha of biodiversity revegetation; constructed 90km fencing, 180km surface water management earthworks as well as evaporative ponds, dams, siphon wells, and surface drains.
Middle Pallinup – establishment of 2,185ha of perennial pastures; 210ha of native vegetation planted; constructed 18 stock crossings over streams; 10ha of land treated from soil erosion; 104ha for water repellence, subsurface compaction and high subsoil pH.
Southern Incentive
The Southern Incentive program encourages sustainable land use to protect biodiversity, waterways and soil health.
Seventy-six land managers and community groups in the South Coast Region have received nearly $400,000 for a range of remedial and protective activities.
Incentives are matched dollar-for-dollar by landholders and project partners which represents a significant investment in NRM.
On ground works include fencing to protect native vegetation and waterways, revegetation with native local species, establishment of perennial pasture species to address NRM issues, soil health improvement, weed management and coastal works.
