South Coast NRM Actions
NASHS Environmental Practices
As part of the building Cultural Understanding in Natural Resource Management subprogram, North Albany Senior High School, in partnership with South Coast NRM Inc., is running a new school based Science and Society & Environment (S&E) program.
The ‘Environmental Practises Project’ is a structured program designed to introduce Indigenous school students to the range of NRM practices and projects in the western part of the South Coast Region. The aims of this project are:
- to increase students’ awareness and understanding of their local environment, in particular environmental impacts of land use
- to provide positive role models for students
- to build networks to enable them to further their education, training or employment in the field of NRM.
The program involves in-school and on-site activities which directly relate to the students Science and S&E curriculum outcomes. The group of students undertake supervised visits to properties and sites to view and/or participate in activities such as farm forestry, seed collection, plant- ing, fencing, research, identification of heritage sites and the protection and monitoring of flora & fauna.
The first site visit occurred on Wednesday 17 May 2006 at the Nowanup property near Boxwood Hills, where students were introduced to the Meeting Place, learned about the brush mulching technique and listened to Elders Treasy Woods, Alma Woods, William Woods and Winnie Larson about links to the country and NRM specialists about the biodiversity restoration plan for the property.
