Porongurup Weed Control Project

Volunteers from Albany and Denmark are helping the Friends of the Porongurup Range with hand pulling weeds as part of a weed control program aimed to stop seedlings from taking hold in the Porongurup National Park.

The weed control project, initiated by Oyster Harbour Catchment Group, aims to stop weed seedlings from setting seed as they emerge in the Park following the wildfire in February 2007.

The last 3 weeding days were in the Park, with a focus on hand weeding Dolichos seedlings and regrowth in two creek lines, where the rare and endangered Apium prostratum filipii grows.
Dolichos pea is a creeper which can suffocate native vegetation, with a potential to eliminate Apium from these areas.

The weeding days are held on 1st Sunday each month from 9am to 12 noon. The next one will be on 3rd February (we’ll give January a miss). Contact Klaus or Lisa Braun for more information on (08) 9853 2171.
