Great Southern Grammar Students Coastcare Week
DATE: 10 Decemer 2008
Students from Great Southern Grammar had their final camp of the year last week at Boat Harbour near Wellstead. The Year 7 students camped out for two nights, surviving a thunderstorm in their tents.
‘The students have a great time learning about the environment and appreciate the chance to get to know their classmates better,’ teacher Susan McCabe said.
On December 4, as part of Coastcare Week, the students undertook a series of beach monitoring, sustainable fishing and dieback hygiene activities.
South Coast NRM Inc. Coastal Officer, Sheryn Prior, helped the students develop a profile of the beach environment, highlighting the role dune vegetation plays in buffering the rest of the land from the harsh conditions on the coast.
The Year 7 students did some ‘virtual fishing’, discovering the tools of sustainable fisheries management and the interesting biology of some well known fish species.
‘It’s great to see so many young people keen on fishing for fun and preserving fish stocks’, Department of Fisheries Marine Education Officer Kylie North said.
Students scrubbed their boots and sprayed them with methylated spirits to prevent spreading Phytophthora dieback. They were also introduced to the new cross-tenure dieback signage and a ‘drinking game’ about dieback.
‘The students really got into the drinking game where they saw first-hand the devasting effect dieback has on plant roots,’ South Coast NRM Inc. Dieback Officer, Paul Donovan said.
The local community group, Coastforce, actively cares for the Boat Harbour area.
