The European or common starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is one of the world’s most successful invasive species, capable of continental colonisation. Starlings represent a significant biosecurity risk to agriculture, threaten biodiversity and can affect human health where they have become established.
The Department of Agriculture and Food WA employed six (6) Indigenous Biosecurity Officers to monitor and undertake surveillance of starling populations in the South Coast Region. The employees' contracts ended on 30 June 2007. This project funded the extension of the employment contracts for the six (6) Indigenous Starling team members for a further twelve (12) months to value-add to the South Coast NRM Inc. funded projects and to engage the community in the starling campaign. It also funded more radio-tracking work, which proved to be one of the most effective tools for detection and surveillance of starlings.
