Southern Incentives in Focus

Southern Incentives Grant Program

This popular grant program funded 26 land managers and four groups in three separate project themes. Funding through the Australian Government's Caring for Our Country program to reduce the impacts of wind erosion, saw 266ha of perennial pastures established, 170ha stubble mulching demonstration site completed and a field day held featuring specially modified machinery to mulch and retain stubbles in situ.

Activities to prevent wind erosion also included claying 183ha and gravelling 12ha of erosion prone sands. Control of WoNS was completed on 38ha and was carried out by four separate groups. Educational activities to raise awareness of weeds, their recognition and control methods were part of this funding.

Southern Incentives project

Through funding from the State NRM Office, Southern Incentives also funded land managers to protect and enhance remnant wandoo woodland using fencing and revegetation. This project boosts habitat protection for the endangered Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo by excluding domestic stock through fencing and connecting vegetation patches through revegetation.

In total 280ha of remnant bushland has been protected. The wandoo woodland and Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo project received an enthusiastic response from the farming community who have been concerned about the dwindling numbers of Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo in their areas. There is potential to expand this type of project as more farmers understand and can see value in protecting their remnant bushland.
