Thinking of an NRM career?

With greater community concern about environmental issues and increased demand for services focused on the environment, natural resource management is a growing field.

Employees in the natural resource management field undertake work in areas such as catchment management, landcare, research, soil conservation, marine and coastal rehabilitation, flora and fauna protection.

Employment opportunities exist in the TAFE and university sectors; the mining and minerals industry; government research agencies; and in managing conservation parks, forest or local government reserves and crown land. Community sector organisations such as South Coast NRM are also employers of a wide range of skilled workers.

Tasks performed in natural resource management roles may include;

  • Flora and fauna conservation
  • Monitoring of the environment (e.g. soil, water, land and air)
  • Environmental management and rehabilitation
  • Invasive species management
  • Geological, plant and animal surveys
  • Aboriginal cultural heritage and restoration works
  • Laboratory work
  • Developing resource management policies
  • Working with government and environmental groups to access grant schemes
  • Developing and implementing community education programs
     Competition for positions is high, especially for entry level roles, but by gaining practical experience in a natural resource management organisation your chances of establishing a career in the industry are greatly improved.

Good personal attributes to have or develop are;
  • An interest in conservation and management of the environment
  • Ability to grasp scientific information
  • Sound oral and written communication skills
  • Affinity with the outdoors
  • Patience and perseverance
